We envision the following short-term and long-term impacts that will affect all major PERSIST-SEQ stakeholders during the project and directly upon successful project completion.
Short/medium-term impact
(<10 years upon project completion)
- Reduced costs and risks of clinical trials and cancer drug development through development of biomarkers for earlier detection (and possibly the prediction) of resistance during the development and validation of drugs.
- Improved clinical management of cancer by mitigating or circumventing resistance by elucidating the mechanisms of therapeutic resistance.
- Accelerated integration of single-cell sequencing methods in cancer research and beyond by advancing the state-of-the-science in the fields of oncological research and single-cells sequencing by delivering comprehensive methodologies, cutting-edge models, and enhanced experimental infrastructure.
Long-term impact
(>10 years upon project completion)
- Preventing drug resistance in cancer by improvement and better usage of current drugs and design of novel drugs that target or circumvent resistance mechanisms.
- Enhance the economic competitiveness of Europe by (I) supporting economic growth and strengthening the competitiveness of industry in cancer research and single-cell sequencing, (II) supporting European industrial leadership to successfully transform the cancer therapy market worldwide, and (III) establishing Europe as the global leader in single-cell projects and cancer research.
